And this time, we're Sleep Hiking through Innisfree Garden in Millbrook, New York. It's a beautiful place, very relaxing.

What is a Sleep Hike? It's when I do the hiking while you do the sleeping.

James Cave:

Hello and welcome to this another sleep hike right here on the James Cave Instagram feed audio newsletter podcast. Now you might be wondering, what did he just say? And more importantly, what is a sleep hike? Well, it's a thing I invented. Initially, I wanted to create something for the premium level of my newsletter, the Jiffy. And sleep hiking is something I came up with: a gift to host those who are paying subscribers, but and I hate to bring it up here because this is supposed to be a relaxing space, but last week the election, things became the S-word. Stressful. Okay. Now that's the last time that I'll say that word. I'm sorry about that. The point is, I just felt like we could all use a break from the news, from the doom scrolling, and so I wanted to open up the sleep hike to the general community. So let's go. Let's take a relaxing sleep hike together. So here's the idea. And you hopefully fall asleep. That's it. So I do the hiking while you do the sleeping. And so for this sleep hike, I've chosen to visit Innisfree Garden in Millbrook, New York. Now, they're currently closed for this season, but that's okay because we exist in the context of all in which we live and what came before us. And Innisfree is beautiful. There are no coconut trees here, but there are stunning Japanese umbrella pines, Cedar of Lebanon, and Seven Suns flower trees, just to name a few. There's also a commemorative bench for the actor Walton Goggins. Always love seeing those. Okay, before we start, of course, we need to situate ourselves. Now, I'm in my hiking boots, but you don't have to wear any boots at all. In fact, kick off your boots, lay back. There you go, recline, kick your kick your shoes up, kick your feet up there, maybe heat up a cup of sleepy time tea. Now, apply a Lanache water sleeping mask that you purchased from Sephora.com that contains mineral-rich water as well as squalene to hydrate and smooth the skin. Okay. Once you've done that, breathe in. Breathe in, hold it. Okay, while you hold your breath, I'm gonna open up our map here. You know, when you get here at Innisfree, they give you this really big fold-out map. It's just full of all these places to see. Whoa, okay. Actually, there is quite a lot here. Looks like there's 49 stops on this map. Well, we'd better get going. Okay, you can breathe out now. Here we go. Let's get started. Let's start walking. We're walking. Okay, I'm seeing a beautiful row of Dawn Redwoods. Let's see what that is on the map. Oh, on the map it's called Row of Dawn Redwoods. Wow, I'm also seeing some east stairs, a north lawn over there, and a middle terrace. Really helps you understand where you are here, you know. It's really something. They call it a 185-acre work of art. It all started when Walter and Marion Beck began building out these gardens when they lived here in the 1920s and 30s, and it became a public garden in 1960. You know, when I'm here in the year 2024, I feel free. I don't know about you. Do you feel free? The zigzag bridge feels free. Isn't this free? Isn't it free? Isn't it free? In this free garden. I see how it all comes together now. Well, by the way, it isn't free. It costs $10 general admission and $5 for seniors and children aged 5 to 15, but if you're a member, it's free, and memberships start at $50. Okay, continuing on, and oh, what do we see here? Oh, these are the telltale signs of a cup garden. Now a cup garden is a term coined by Walter to describe the garden rooms that they designed or focal points in the landscape. Isn't that something? And here there are many cup gardens. It's the primary feature here. The Marians worked with a landscape designer named Lester to unify it all with Tyrell Lake here and the Lake Path to integrate the many smaller cup gardens into one dynamic experience in the natural landscape. That's what I want. Let's feel that dynamic experience right now. You are a part of that dynamic experience. And while we're feeling that, let's go follow the lake path. What do we see here? Okay, I think these might be Canada geese. Best to leave them alone. Um it's over here. We're walking now. I'm seeing this. Oh, I think I'll just sit down here for a minute. I think I'm gonna lay down. This looks like a place called Oh, Dumpling Knoll. Oh, that's that's nice. I'm so sorry. I think I may have I may have dozed off there for a minute. Somehow I've ended up on the zigzag bridge. How did I get here? We're walking, we're walking on the zigzag bridge next to this meadow stream and a little bog. Now I want you to reflect and look within yourself and s and ask yourself, when was the last time you used the word bog? You know? Bog. It's not used that often these days. I think it dates back to the Middle Ages. It's a gay look and Irish word, isn't that something? Oh, there's another bog there. Looks like they call that the corn crib bog. I hope you're not asleep yet because there will be a quiz when we're finished. Pass the corn crib bog, I can Have you ever seen a lawn gently undulating? Oh, that's what's happening here at the overlook on the other side of the lake. It's really something. I I sure wish you could see it. Well, the fog is rolling in now, so we'd better head back. This concludes another relaxing and exhilarating sleep hike. Oh, almost forgot. Now the quiz. Um, actually, what was the name of the website where we bought that sleeping mask that we put on? I honestly forgot, and I need to uh get some more. So if you could just DM me wherever we got that sleeping mask, that'd be great. Thanks. And with that, I hope you're sound asleep, getting re energized for another day fighting for democracy. Good night.
